15inch tyre options - Babyblade400 - 11-10-2014 05:38 PM

Hi all,

I am the owner of a 2001 Caravelle 2.6i (not Syncro). I need to replace the tyres on my bus. The last of the T3's came out with Goodyear GT2 tyres. This is a reinforced tyre, but not commercial. The load and speed index is 99S. The problem is that these tyres have been discontinued recently. What is my options? I don't want to fit a commercial tyre and make the bus look like a delivery van. Anyone with a non-syncro that can tell me what tyres you are using?

Karel

Hi Karel

I had the same problem recently on my 2002 2.3
I had the GT2's until this year. The tyre shop recommended I replace them with Pirrelli's. I'll check tomorrow which ones but basically the same spec as the GT2's and they are working great.

I have always felt 205/65 R15 OE spec tyres on the Caravelle look too small. I would go up one profile to 205/70 R15s and if it was mine I'd probably try General Grabber GTs @ ±R1039 ea (LI 96 - 710KG / SI H - 210km/h). The Caravelle pictured is is fitted with 205/70 15s to give you an idea of the look.

Most 205/65 R15 tyres have a load index of 94 (670KG)

As Pirellis go there's the

Pirelli P1 Cinturato 205/65 R15 LI 94 SI H

Pirelli Scorpion S-ATR 205/65 R15 LI 94 SI H

Dunlop have the

Dunlop SP Sport LM704 205/65 R15 LI 99 SI H

Yokohama have the

Yokohama AE01 BluEarth 205/65 R15 LI 99 SI H

While the Goodyear GT2 may have had an LI of 99 the Microbus/Caravelle literature of the time called for a tyre LI/SI of 97S and that would have had a safety margin built in. 97 gives you a load index of 730kg per tyre - 2,920KG total - a 14% safety margin @ GVM (gross vehicle mass)

A Caravelle's tare (unladen weight) is 1,660KG
A Caravelle's Gross Vehicle Mass is 2,565KG
A Caravelle's Payload is 845KG

To go back to the General Grabber GT, the tyre is suggested for 4X4 / SUV road use, but without the off-road / delivery vehicle tyre look. Even with an LI of 96 there is still a 10% safety margin at GVM. I can't however vouch for the tyre as I have no experience with it. All I can say is that another General Grabber tyre was amongst the top scoring tyres in a recent 4X4 shoot-out. They are supplied by Continental Tyre in South Africa and come from the same factory.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated. Thanks for a great forum. I will contact the suppliers to check on the availibility. Very tempted to go for the Yokohamas.

You you do inquire about the Yokohama BluEarth AE01 , remember to ask for the XL version (Extra Load) SI 99 as the standard tyre has a LI of 94.

That tread looks like the Conti Vanco 2, that i had on My Vito, Kak in the wet, wheels spins for nothing,

i replaced them with Falken wild peak, awesome so far, only been on the Vito for 2 months, great in the wet. quite as a church mouse, and rated well in the AT tyre test in last months SA4x4 Mag. cost was also good R1500 each, that was for 215/70R16. Vanco's were 205/65 R16.

would fit them too my next syncro 4x4 as well. when i need new tyres. but that is a long way off.

also think about tyres like the conti world contact or cross contact, come in a 215/75R15.
