V6 3.4 with Dictator management. - OupaGawie - 05-22-2016 06:53 PM

As you know I acquired the 1990 syncro with 3.4 v6 with Dictator management system.
The previous owner said he needs to replace plugs every 6000 km.
Bus drove well but battled to start this morning. Stated and ran well for about 30 km.
I stopped for 3 hours. Then battled to start. Misfired and cut out a few times.
Anybody around who knows these engines as well as the Dictator systems.

Best advise I can give you is get rid of that after market engine management. They are all a waste of
time.
I know this dosent help you right now but for future reliability.
I have never come across a good one except when the sales man is trying to sell you one.

Welcome to the world of aftermarket systems. I'm battling the same demons with a Spittronic and am sourcing all original parts for my 2.6.

Thx so far.
What will replacing the dictator with the original system entail.
Can a person buy these off the shelf

Suppose you'd have to start with the agents for the motor with you enquiries or online, Ebay etc.

I'm sometimes amazed what one can find.

The fuel injection came with the updated motor which was a combined project between Ford and the University of Stellenbosch. There are many stated advantages of the FI system, however an aftermarket ECU has its problems. One of them being cold starts. Look into replacing with Weber Carb. The one with the 29mm throat. Joes scrapyard in Springs has a huge amount of Ford Essex motor parts.

That is right. In 92/93 The Sierra and Saphire 3.0i RS had a Lucas fuel injection system developed by Samcor and Pretoria University. It was only fitted to the later black block motors. Power up from 102kw to 117kw.

The 3.4 V6 comes from the Courier bakkie and never had FI. It was a carb setup.

Post a pic of your engine, but I'm presuming you have the intake manifold from the 3.0i RS motor? (As in attached pic) Your two options would be to track down an original 3.0i RS ECU and wiring and try get that to work or revert to the original carb setup. The original ECU is going to be pretty scarce as that was a SA only development that only ran for two years.
