Broken Clutch
Hey everyone(Russel and Stuart)
![]() I got stuck in the sand today in the kgalagadi at rooiputs, very slight sand really.i engaged 4x4 and was still stuck and eventually with both diffs locked I got out .my tires were set for tar driving 375 psi , but somehow my clutch seems now completely broken, was just making noises at first after getting stuck and now I can't change gear at all unless I turn the car off. I'm driving to upington tomorrow for help, My question is, is there something obvious that has happened?, it is a luk clutch and only 3 months old. Does this happen a lot or usually so easily when driving off road..? Stuart I will organize payment for the saamtrek as soon as I can, can't do it from here but possibly from upington. RE: Broken Clutch
hi Bruce,
hard to say, sound like either the pressure plate has collapsed or the clutch plate lining has come loose, or maybe the thrust bearing failed or came off the fork, no hassle on the payment until month end. stuart I may be a mechanic, but i can't fix stupid Bad planning on your part does not make your issue an crisis to me Bad workmanship by other garages does not entiltle you to better rates at me Syncro, syncro , syncro and more syncro, this is the syncro way of life |

RE: Broken Clutch
Thanks Stuart
Well I guess it is better than the gearbox breaking. I can't wait to see what went wrong under really hardly any stress. Caravelle Syncro 2.3 Andreno 1990 Caravelle Syncro 2.1 Stock Standard Volksiebus 1.8 1994 Microbus 2.3i 2002 |

RE: Broken Clutch
remember to drop your tyre pressure in the sand, then you won't get stuck next time.

RE: Broken Clutch
[Ok so had a look at car today.
Clutch has grease on it from leaking rear main seal. But the problem is actually a bearing.( thrust bearing?) Which has disintegrated onto the shaft and the shaft is damaged. Thinking of replacing the bearing with a brass bush because the damaged shaft will just destroy another bearing. Had the box completely overhauled by gearbox exchange 3 months ago so hopefully they will fix it at no charge when I get back. They replaced all bearings and machined the shaft smooth because there was some wear on it. RE: Broken Clutch
Hi Bruce, that is the spigot bearing in the crank, maybe got damged when they fitted the box, it needs to go in 100% level not to break the bearing,
thrust bearing is the big one, on the fork. not sure if a brass bush will work, tried it on a toyota conversion many years ago, the spigot shaft seized in the bush. maybe an oilite bush will work, but rather fit another bearing, clean up the shaft and fix the crank sea oil leakl, stuart I may be a mechanic, but i can't fix stupid Bad planning on your part does not make your issue an crisis to me Bad workmanship by other garages does not entiltle you to better rates at me Syncro, syncro , syncro and more syncro, this is the syncro way of life |

RE: Broken Clutch
Thanks Stuart
Henk is wanting to put in an Oilite bush, but the correct bearing should also be here tomorrow, so we will see. Do you think this issue could have contributed to my drive train slop? When i accelerate after changing gears there is a definite delay in response from the drive train. RE: Broken Clutch
