Re: Jumping out of 4th gear
Syncro specialist only !!
when you open up a Syncro gearbox you cannot only change the synchro rings but you will need to replace bearings and seals once the box is open

we can send your box up to JHB and get a quote to redo your box or I can supply you with a already reconditioned gearbox

2.6i Syncro Doka 1984
2.5i SSA PlayBus Syncro 1989
2.5i Factory 5 Cylinder Syncro 1991
2.0i Cox Camper Syncro 1989
2.0i Big Window Syncro 1992
2.6i 2WD Doka 1986
1.9TDI Golf Syncro 1991

Re: Jumping out of 4th gear
If it is Jumping out of 4th then it is not your Syncro rings worn but the Gear it self has what we call a helix or Gear engagement teeth and that is worn that cause the Selector to jump out of the Gear. and in short the Whole gear must be replaced
A Beetle and Kombi Box is not any Gearbox Specialist cup of Tea.
A Syncro takes it to the next level ! Do not give it to any guy that say he knows Gearboxes as I can give you a letter he will $*%&@#&&#&$%&% it up

RE: Jumping out of 4th gear
Hi all,

I'm replying to this old thread as I'm interested in buying a syncro with this problem. Any idea of what the cost could be - and no - I won't take it as a quote!

I just need an idea by how much the "normal" price should be adjusted given this issue (slipping out of 4th).

Thanks!

Jac

RE: Jumping out of 4th gear
Jumping out of 4th can be caused by a number of factors and quite often it is a combination of them together. 1 badly worn gear, 2 badly worn selector ring, 3 play in support bearing behind 4th gear or 5 worn case caused by bearing spinning in case due to incorrect assembly of box.
The repair can start at about R6000.00 just to replace the 4th gear or the selector ring and can very easily increase to R20 000 for a proper rebuild.

Jumping out of 4th gear
I had my 4th gear replaced by Andreno 2 years ago for approx R9000. His work was shoddy to say the least. Apart from many problems afterwards, he did not replace the OLD seals on the box and I struggled with leaks which he did not repair. I now have to replace the entire gearbox. Apparently Erlemanns is our only option? Do it once and properly would be my advice and take the salesman talk with a pinch of salt. There seems to be a difference between a reconditioned and "refurbished" box. Make sure what you get.

RE: Jumping out of 4th gear
i am not defending Andreno here but we often run into the same thing.

the problem, may well be with him, but i feel from experience the biggest hassle is with syncro owners. not all but some.

i will explain:
if you quote a guy r25k for a full proper recon on a gearbox, he says no way, so then you end up doing a r10k quick fix cos that is all he can afford. then a year or 2 down the line you as the supplier are the pig in the story.

just bearings, gaskets and seals cost r4500- 5000, crown wheel and pinion for an oe one R6500 to 7500, pirate cw and p r4500, gears at aprrox r2000 each x 5, some are not avaiable anymore, syncro rings R1000 for 5 oe ones, his excludes any labour and oil, and you need to find a guy that knows how to built a syncro gearbox, they are few and far between.

so work out what you get for r10k,

as others have said, buy an erlemanns exchange from Ace, small price to pay for piece of mind.

hope this helps with you problem

I may be a mechanic, but i can't fix stupid
Bad planning on your part does not make your issue an crisis to me
Bad workmanship by other garages does not entiltle you to better rates at me
Syncro, syncro , syncro and more syncro, this is the syncro way of life
