Project 1.8T 20v AGU
The long awaited ....
I had a hard time to make a choice on a replacement engine.

I considered TDi but costs are ridiculous especially considering the gearbox upgrades needed

I considered 2.0 8v Golf but im concerned because of the lack of low down rpm torque that I generally love on the WBX and.....one day, I would l like to do the dunes (this motor is said to be a little on the weak side)

Found this neat and clean install on internet...im looking forward to have this in soon.

SACRIFICES
So the final decision was made with some small sacrifices.
The deck lid will have to be raised a small amount.
Ill probably not have the low down torque as with the normal aspirated wbx.

GAINS
I will gain on reliability because these 1.8T have been around since the late 90's and has lots of spares.
Ill gain in fuel economy (not sure how much but expect at least what a 2.0 8v Golf motor gives.
Ill gain on power, on slightly modified ecu i might get the peak torque of [email protected] and 110kw at just over 5000rpm(this will be custom tuned by altering the standard AGU ecu by a specialist.

General full service on this engine will cost me about R900 which ill be more than happy to pay.

I should get my AGU 1.8T 20v on Saturday if all goes to plan.
It will be a slow build because ill be doing it to the highest standard with lots of custom parts and where possible only original VW parts.

Ill keep you all posted as I progress....

RE: Project 1.8T 20v AGU
Im so jealous.

Eclipse what have you worked your cost out to be? What will you be manufacturibg yourself? I would keep the AGU at 150hp for reliabiity and sympathy on the gearbox.

RE: Project 1.8T 20v AGU
Check that all the breather pipes on the engine manifold you are getting are there and in one pice. 4 little pipes and a valve will set you back R1600.00 from VW. Also use the recommended fully synthetic oils in this engine. You will find this engine will be far nicer than any waterboxer with torque. As petrol engines go you won't find a better one. To pay someone to do this conversion you can expect about R 60 000 to R 75 000 be pending on quality of instillation.
In the US you can by a complete kit to install theses engines into your syncro. Cost without engine is about 5000 US dollars.
