National Saamtrek

Re: National Saamtrek
I reckon keeping it simple is still stunning around there. If the South guys go from De Rust through Meiringspoort then cut right to Willowmore at Klaarstroom, through Willowmore and hug the Baviaanskloof Mountains, swing up to come through Steytlerville and Wolwefontein then to Darlington Dam - Eish eish eish - then the Thursday linking back into the same road system as you are suggesting to Patensie - Man! that is a memorable saamtrek on its own already without any technicalities and difflocks.
Go for it Herms give us some dust! problem is that to come back for more we are going to have to fight off the hordes that will be reading the trip report of certain people who will be doing a 3 week mountain pass tour - can you imagine what is going to come out of that!?Tongue

Re: National Saamtrek
I'll find out from the local DS riders what the road conditions are for the Grootrivier poort crossing.

Re: National Saamtrek
Ok I've sent an email to EC Parks requesting a substantial discount on doing a section of the Bedrogfontein route from Mvubu. If this works out we can do 2 or 3 hours of the trail before heading to the VW museum and then onto Baviaans. As well as whatever else we come up with!

Baviaanstrek
Summary of stopover sites;-
For anyone who doesnt want to camp, there is accommodation at all the suggested sites. Please check out the details on the websites and make your own bookings if you are not camping, then please let me know so that we have the correct numbers for campsite bookings.

South group;
1/ Tues night 20 March - De Rust, Sunset Caravan Park – tentative booking for 10 vehicles.
R80 per vehicle plus R20 p/p
Dogs allowed on a lead, and wild women in a catsuit.

http://www.oliviersrust.co.za/

2/ Wed night 21 March - Darlington Dam, Mvubu Campsite – no Booking yet
R40 p/p camping plus R38 a day conservation levy = Total R78 p/p [this conflicts with the rates on the web but I am assured verbally that this is the rate by the Addo booking office]
No dogs, cats, parrots or horses allowed but if you have a pet Hippo then you can bring it along to socialise with the locals in the river.

3/ Thurs night 22 March – Patensie/Komdomo,
Bruintjieskraal - tentative booking made for 12 vehicles
R60 per person.
No pets allowed – but if you have a vicious rabid dog and you have to keep it locked up in a cage then technically it can not be considered a pet – then you can bring it to the camp. They have also made a concession that we can bring a dog because we have our own group campsite away from anybody. Keep woefie close though because they warn that it wont be the first dog there that has run off barking at a baboon only to end up as a high protein meal.

Doringkloof campsite – Tentative booking for 12 vehicles
R60 per person camping. Trails are R100 per vehicle and R20 per person.
No dogs cause they poo on the lawn and the owner had a problem last year with a poodle that got stuck in the throat of his Boerboel.

Re: National Saamtrek
Really envy you guys....Been wanting to explore that area for a long time.
This would have been ideal since you guys seem to know the area, so it would have been a "guided tour"!
However, we still have kids at school, and if we do it, I think we would like to make it a bit longer to justify the long trip from Pretoria. Maybe next time... in the meantime enjoy it!
( and post some nice photos / trip report afterwards to make us even more jealous!).
E.

It's not just a 4x4, it's a Syncro........

Francois from Uitenhage said that he and 4 other Syncro's will hopefully be joining us to. He'll let us know as soon as he has confirmation from the rest.

Re: National Saamtrek
Thanks Clem lets hope we dont need it!
Pity you are not going to make it this time seeing as it is in your backyard, but then again it gives us a better chance of pulling you up the West Coast or the Cederberg on our next one up there again later in the year.
