It all depends on the size and the amount of support of your roof rack. You will reach the limits of safe handling ( being top heavy ) if to much weight is placed on your roof. I went for a little more than half the roof as I do not need more area. I had mine custom made.

The roof has plenty usable space, however going on-top poses many issues in itself. I've had in excess of 200kg on a D/C 4x4 once, but would not recommend it!
Apart from the height issues, the added wind resistance will add 1-2 l/100km.
Maybe this will help in terms of weight allowed - remember the roof rack also weighs something alone Idea http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/t3-gross-vehicle-weights-payloads-etc_topic43527.html
