A huge thanks for my 2.6 conversion finally finished!
I wish to publically acknowledge and thank 3 groups of people who were involved in my 2.6 5 cyl conversion.

Firstly to Martin at Erlemanns. Thank you for a magnificent job on the gearbox, putting up with my questions and having to go through every part and piece with me! This included oiling plates being fitted, new c&p,new casing sections, gears, bearings the lot Big Grin

Secondly to Dean from Ace, for sourcing and supplying the motor, bell housing and loom. Also for replacing every part i wasn't happy with to ensure ultimately the motor runs like a dream :!:

Thirdly to Paul and Stuart from Syncro Hospital. They did the actual conversion. Thank you for a fastidious, wonderful job. Also for putting up with my endless questions and phone calls, losing your tools and generally getting in the way  A special thanks to you both for your patience and immaculate work that you do, working well into the evening at times and also for driving around with me hour after hour as we tried to solve the odd vibration problem.

It has turned out a magnificent conversion and I'm extremely happy. Thank you to all of you again and I heartily recommend your services to everyone out there :!: Big Grin

That's great! Let's see some pics and a breakdown of costs if possible.

Re: A huge thanks for my 2.6 conversion finally finished!
I realise that this possibly could have been done a bit cheaper if I did it myself. Perhaps not though because what i believe i paid people for was experience and stopping me reinventing wheels! I watched Paul deal with many motor issues and wiring issues that would have had me well stuck and having to pay people anyway to sort out what I may have done wrong!

Gearbox Costs R16 250. Complete overhaul including fitting oiling plates, new CW&P, new VW 2.65th gear too. Also a new casing section (which Erlemanns pulled out of their magic cupboard!)

Engine, wiring, cross member, bell housing etc R30 000.

AA Transporting vehicle to Stuart, installing the motor, wiring, new parts to motor including cam belt, oil pump, water pump, clutch kit, plug leads, plugs, oils, dizzy cap and rotor, airfilter, water expansion bottle, pressure caps etc (all the running stuff that was old basically. If in doubt replace it was the motto.) Raised deck, carpeting, lid, and labour for all the above, total spend R27 000.

Grand Total R73 250  But....the goal was to create a reliable travel vehicle again. I think we have done this, there will still be a bit more spend tidying up. The exhaust could be renewed too. I am foam filling all cut away bits and sound deadening the entire engine bay carefully. She is already quiet and soon should be extremely quiet.

Projects already done include 2.6 discs and brake pads, reconned prop with internal bushes done. All front suspension rubbers, ball joints etc were replaced about 50 000kms ago. Front wheel bearings and all cv's done in last 20 000km's.

Yeah you guys did :!: Awesome idea by the way. I am doing it on the other breather pipes too. Wink

By the way the engine fault was eventually traced to a faulty plug lead, so replaced with new oe lead set and wow!!!!! runs like a dream! The other noises under acceleration i eventually tracked down to the gearbox lifting and touching the underside of the fuel tank under load torque. Spacer on gearbox mounting had been left out, so replaced spacer and inserted shim on engine carrier to drop motor very slightly on rhs as was not quite level. Funny that, maybe my chassis or gearbox mountings through time slightly out of original alignment. All runs true now and doesn't touch gearbox and totally quiet.
