Doka Engine Compartment Lid

Doka Engine Compartment Lid
Despite the rear engine compartment door on the Doka being quite wide, one can access nothing other than the dip stick on my Doka what with the 2.6 five cylinder engine and air cleaner ducting taking up a lot of space.

That leaves one with the top access hatch made of wood :o  and bolted down with four bolts which does not encourage regular engine checks. I think this is going to need some attention. For one thing my hatch is fastened down with two 19mm bolts and two 17mm bolts. The 19s are the originals and the 17s are replacements. The lid is not in great condition any more. One corner is broken off, I think the insulation underneath has all fallen out.

I was thinking one could probably make a replica from Marine Ply and replace the bolts with four new ones of the same size. Alternatively one could make one from aluminium, possibly put hinges on it and a gas strut as can be seen in the bottom pic.

A wide metal lid from a Microbus / Caravelle would make access a whole lot easier, but this would require a lot of metal cutting and PT which I am not sure I want to get involved with.

What have other Doka owners done?

Re: Doka Engine Compartment Lid
Mine has metal plate that's quite thick. I think it's the original one as my previous doka had a similar one. I just need to get a new seal between the plate and loadbin.

Re: Doka Engine Compartment Lid
I understood 1986 was the last year of manufacture for the Doka in SA. Not sure if they were introduced in 1979 or later. I know that very early ones had blanks for the wiper spindles for left hand drive.
