2.6 5cyl with 2speed 5th gear fitted?
Needing to make a decision on whether to fit the 2.6 2 w/d 5th gear into an otherwise standard Syncro gear box as a 4th gear replacement for a 2.6 5cyl conversion.
Is there anyone with a 2.6 5cyl in a Syncro that has gone this route and if so are you happy with the results?
I am aware of various opinions and have looked through forum. I know the cost and the fact that the rev drop seems to be in the order of only 200 to 300 revs. Needing to make final decision so any extra feedback welcome.

I would leave it standard especially if you plan on towing and would use the extra torque at the higher rpm

2.6i Syncro Doka 1984
2.5i SSA PlayBus Syncro 1989
2.5i Factory 5 Cylinder Syncro 1991
2.0i Cox Camper Syncro 1989
2.0i Big Window Syncro 1992
2.6i 2WD Doka 1986
1.9TDI Golf Syncro 1991

Thanks Dean, i know Stuart also thinks to leave it standard and of course Paul's is standard too. Your Doka that I drove was standard as well wasn't it?

You can send me a mail with all the Gear ratios as STD and where you are thinking of going
then I can make a spread sheet up for you with different RPM and true speeds with the different Gearing

Re: 2.6 5cyl with 2speed 5th gear fitted?
Hi Pierre, I'm really stupid with this stuff.

Attached is a grid of standard 14 inch Syncro speeds per revs vs 2.6 two wheel drive vw.

Also attached the Car Magazine test ratios and tyre sizes given for the 2.6 when it came out.

I have the standard SA 2.1 Syncro box at the moment, I am not sure what the ratios are exaclty. I'm sure you know better than me.

I run 215 80 15 tyres on my vehicle, so my revs are down probably at about 4200 for true 120km/h.

The torque curve on 2.6 is very flat and as you can see in the article max at 3500 revs and usable from 2000 to 4500. I believe with 15 inch wheels that i'm using plus 5th gear from 2.6 box, it should run at about 3800 to 3900 for 120km/h? I can't see why the motor will battle with torque, even if fairly loaded. When towing large boats up passes i think one goes to 3rd anyway and that ratio will stay the same.

Remember that the original 2 VW 2.5 Syncro's done by VWSA also had a syncro box but they have a different diff ratio meaning it cruises very comfortably at 120km/h. It doesn't battle with torque and the 2.6 is earlier torqued than 2.5 (same but comes in ealier). I think it should work quite well?

Does this all help?
